Dr. Daniel McCartney B.Sc./Dip. Dietetics, M.Sc., Ph.D., MINDI
Dr. Daniel McCartney holds a B.Sc. in Human Nutrition & Dietetics, a M.Sc. in Molecular Medicine and a Ph.D. in Public Health and Nutritional Epidemiology. He has been a Lecturer in Human Nutrition & Dietetics at DIT and Adjunct Asst. Professor of Dietetics at Trinity College Dublin since 2003; and is a co-founder of the Nutrition e-cademy. He specialises in the dietary treatment and prevention of chronic disease (e.g. obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, osteoporosis), and has a special interest in the diet and nutritional health of young women, and in the fetal programming of disease. Since 2012, Dan’s research work has focussed primarily on maternal diet, lifestyle and bodyweight and their effects on pregnancy outcome, particularly fetal health. He is widely published in the scientific and medical literature in these areas.
Dan is Director of Dietetic Education at DIT, currently the only training centre for dietitians in Ireland; where he supervises a team of Ph.D. students, mainly in the area of maternal and infant nutrition. Dan also sits on the Irish Heart Foundation’s Nutrition Council, is a member of the Food Safety Authority of Ireland’s Expert Advisory Panel on Folic Acid Fortification and is an advisory board member of the UCD Centre for Human Reproduction. He is also a former Public Relations Officer for the Irish Nutrition & Dietetic Institute (INDI), and a former columnist for the Irish Examiner.
Dr. Declan Byrne, B.Sc./Dip. Diet., MB BCh BAO, M.Sc., MINDI, FRCPI
Dr. Declan Byrne is a specialist in general, geriatric and stroke medicine. In addition he holds specialist qualifications in clinical nutrition and pharmaceutical medicine. He practices as a consultant physician at St. James’s Hospital, Dublin and he is a Senior Lecturer in Medical Gerontology at Trinity College, Dublin. Declan is also Chairman of the board of the Irish Nutrition and Dietetic Institute (INDI), and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (RCPI) where he is regional specialty adviser for general internal medicine. He is also a member of the MRCPI clinical exams committee and member of the Continuous Medical Education (CME) and professional development committees.
